Meet the dogs at the Rescue Open Day

The dogs currently in rescue (above, below)
This Saturday, May 12 2012, Happy Staffe Rescue will be holding a Rescue Open Day.

The private boarding kennels where are dogs are cared for - Broadmarsh Kennels & Cattery have kindly agreed to us holding this event.

It is a chance to come and meet the dogs in rescue and to meet the people behind the rescue including many of our welfare team. We hope to be able to undertake home checks in some cases if time permits for anyone interested in rehoming a dog.

Children and dogs are welcome, but must be supervised at all times.

Further details can be found on the website here.

Captain Corn, raising money for the staffies

You can support me at www.justgiving.com/jonathangittingshsr
Well this is about 90% of what I'll be wearing when I take part in the Bridgnorth 22-mile sponsored walk.

I'll probably get a red cape (to fit the title Captain Corn) and maybe yellow face paint to finish it all off.

Every penny raised will be donated to Happy Staffie Rescue.

Lush event closes - £437.71 raised

Thank you once again to the people at Lush, including store manager Claire for their wonderful support, and to the customers at Merry Hill who together helped raise a total of £437.71 over the two days.

The new kennel contract working already

As you will no doubt have already seen, we have increased the number of dogs in our care quite dramatically.

This is thanks to the successful negotiations that were undertaken with the private boarding kennels where the dogs are cared for. The proprietors of the kennels have proved invaluable over the last several months and their willingness to accept a new contract that allowed more dogs at a reduced daily charge has allowed us to get more dogs in.

Now the challenge is to raise those additional funds that will be required to cover the cost of these additional dogs.

We had a steady stream of people coming to visit us, to read about the dogs in our care and those who have been successfully rehomed. And of course, many made donations and purchased raffle tickets.

We look forward to another successful day tomorrow.

Many thanks to Clare and girls at Lush, and to all those who took the time to come and see us and supported us with their kindness and generosity.

4th charity, terms provisionally agreed

We have received an update on our offer of terms for the Shrewsburys shop and I am pleased to report that the landlord has provisionally agreed to those terms. There are a few hurdles still to cross, not least the contract, and a sitting-tenant, but these should hopefully pass easily enough. We will keep you posted.

Oscar, in need of a new home

Beautiful little Oscar is looking for his loving new home.

He has been with us for a little while, but Charlene has provided him with regular breaks from kennel life with her family with lots of love and fuss that goes with it.

Take a look at Oscar at his page here and if you can give him a loving new home please get in touch with us.

Meet Iggy

Iggy is another new dog fresh into our care.

You can find out more about here on her Happy Staffie page here.

Will and Ebony

If you're interested in staffies, or want to give a dog a home, what about a pair?

Take a look at these two beautiful staffie crosses, Will and Ebony. Our welfare team have been working hard with these two lovely doggies and we are looking for them to hopefully be rehomed together as we would hate to see them parted.

G'day Simon, and thanks aplenty

Happy Staffie Rescue certainly manages to spread the word, and that word has reached Australia of all places.

I know we receive donations from lots of people from all different walks of life but it was still a little special to be noticed from half a world away.

Many thanks to Simon Snelling, of Queensland, Australia for his donation, thanks that we always extend to all our supporters wherever they live.

Rescue Open Day May 12, 11am-3pm

Happy Staffie Rescue is holding a Rescue Open Day on Saturday May 12.

If you want to meet the dogs, and the people behind the rescue you can do so between 11am and 3pm.

The event is taking place at the private boarding kennels where we board most of the our dogs - Broadmarsh Kennels and Cattery, Wassell Grove Lane, Hagley, Worcestershire, DY9 9JL.

The times are very strict, so don't get there before or later as the kennels will need to get on with the business of caring for the dogs.

You can find out more information on the website here.

Charity fundraising t-shirts on sale NOW for a LIMITED PERIOD

Thanks to Jude Morgan, and the people at 'fourkingace designs' Happy Staffie Rescue has launched the first of a strictly limited edition range of t-shirts.

'fourkingace designs' is a new fashion design company who will manufacture the t-shirts for the charity at cost price. All net proceeds from the sale of each t-shirt will go to the charity.

The first design on sale now will be available to order for a strictly limited time. Each t-shirt sold will come an individual note to confirm its number in the limited edition. After the 30 June deadline that design will not be available again.

'fourkingace designs' will then launch the next design in t-shirts, and so we hope it will go on.

Please remember that due to the limited nature, and the funds of the charity, none of the t-shirts will be despatched until the deadline has been reached. Then they will be produced and shipped so that more or less everyone receives them very shortly thereafter.

If you would like to order a t-shirt please visit the online charity shop here

Lush have graciously agreed that all funds raised from the sale of their Charity Pots over the weekend will go to the charity. In additional there will be a raffle with some wonderful prizes donated by Lush.

If you about Merry Hill on Saturday or Sunday why not pop along and show your support.

Rex's rehabilitation

Rex is a dog who has been in rescue for too long. His earlier reports were not good, and concerns had been expressed about his behaviour, and whether he would ever be rehomed.

Sue and Anthony Pitt, who have joined our welfare team have been spending a considerable amount of time with him in the last couple of weeks and the outlook has vastly changed.

Sue and Anthony have identified that many of his perceived failings where misplaced, and that Rex is simply a little misunderstood. He does require an assertive owner, someone who can provide him with leadership and maintain a strict training regime. He still requires more work, and we have contacted our good friend Jo Cottrell of DogTrouble about the possibility of her working with him if necessary (she is currently working with Cesar Milan!). Jo did wonderful work with Chester, who she later adopted to join her pack!

Sue and Ant's frequent reports on Rex have really made the difference. He has had one little incident, but this was checked quickly and he has surprised many by showing no aggression to people, animals or birds. It's not a short road for Rex. But the work done by Sue and Ant mean we can persevere with his rehabilitation with the knowledge with the right owner he can be rehomed.

Kennel space expanded

We have today obtained written confirmation that our proposed new contract with the private boarding kennels that provide the day to day care for our dogs has been accepted.

This means, thanks to the work Mark and I undertook, and the openness of the owners to amend their pricing that we will effectively be able to double the number of dogs in our care.

Previously we were able to afford 4-6 dogs depending on income, but more often it was 4-5 dogs at any one time. Now thanks to the kennels accepting a fixed lump sum payment which represents a saving per kennel we can afford 10 kennels. Our job now is to make sure we not only fill those kennels, and retain an occupancy exceeding 90%, but also work doubly hard to find them loving new homes.

4th charity shop search

Going hand in hand with increasing the number of kennels we use is the need to increase funds and to cover their cost.

Therefore today Mark and I spent several hours in Shrewsbury looking at three properties. Thanks must go to Iain Mills at Towler Shaw Roberts. Iain proved a highly effective and efficient agent in our successful completion of the Bridgnorth shop.

Iain attended with us to look at our first shop, and with a little bit of gentle arm-twisting persuaded us to view a second property. We had been reluctant previously based on what we assumed about the location, and how wrong we were. Iain knew what we needed in terms of space, location and price and came up trumps.

Unfortunately the third property we viewed (not sourced through Towler Shaw Roberts) was not up to the requirements, and in fact was somewhat short of the selling points indicated in its advert.

After viewing the three properties we decided on the second and today we have made a provisional offer for a lease. Now begins a period of negotiations which we hope will move swiftly towards a positive conclusion. More updates will follow here.
