Plans to legally require all dogs to be microchipped are underway and should be welcomed.
Microchipping a dog aids owners to trace their dog if it becomes lost, something many owners feel will never happen, or even worse stolen.
While there will always be the debate about penalising responsible owners, and the small matter of actual enforcement and monitoring, the move has to be in the right direction.
Many dog charities and rescues have been calling for this to happen for a number of year. Hopefully placing the onus on breeders will at least ensure the majority of dogs will be covered. Those who are not reputable breeders, of which there are plenty will I am sure simply ignore the requirement.
